About the Author

Kathryn Masson, author and former long-time resident of Santa Barbara, is deeply committed to the Santa Barbara preservation community. She was a member of Santa Barbara's Historic Landmarks Commission-- serving for six years as chairman of both the Landmark Designation Committee and the Awards Committee; as well, she has been on the board of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. She is co-author with Patricia Gebhard of the recently published Santa Barbara County Courthouse.James Chen is a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography and a recipient of an Honorary Master of Science in Professional Photography. He has received awards from the Art Directors Club of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Society of Communications Arts.

This is a magnificent book! If you love Spanish style architecture, and Santa Barbara, California, then this is the book for you. The featured homes are dream homes. There are pages and pages of beautifully decorated homes. I recommend it.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK!

Such a beautiful book, recommended by our architect and builder for obtaining ideas on building a real Spanish Colonial or Revival house. The landscape designs were fantastic as well. Another reader wanted to see "beach shacks" and was disappointed by this book. I lived in Santa Barbara for 6 years and I can tell you have never traveled there. No beach shacks in Santa Barbara. Try along the eastern seaboard coastline.

This is a beautiful book! Unfortunately I bought mine from a used book store and the color photos are very faded. Other than that I love the book! It has gorgeous photos and just enough text. The text is well written and interesting. I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves the Spanish architecture of California.

It is great photography. Santa Barbara is my hometown and since I am away for prolong period of time now I purchased this book. Initially it was to be a present for someone else but by looking at the pictures I was able to enjoy Santa Barbara climate the photography captured so well. I could not bring myself to give away the book. I am keeping it, as it is so dear to my heart right now since it recreates the image as I remember and till I return to SB it will allow me to mentally visit the places I know. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing the subject of this particular style of architecture.

Im building a santa barbara style house and I was disappointed. Not a lot of details. Sure some pics of some SB mansions but not enough photos or details to actually do anything with this book. I guess if you are into SB history it might be OK, otherwise save yourself the $. You will be done browsing it in about 10 minutes and never use it again.
