He has done such a great job of studying the church, culture and leadership today. This book is BEYOND packed with material, but all very on point - like any of Carey's writing (articles, podcast, other books). We got this on audio and bought the book as well so we could reference many of the quotes, points and suggestions. I love that it is written as a book that can be a "guidebook" for discussion for ministry and leadership teams (councils).For those who desire to understand and evolve with the rapidly changing landscape of "church" and "ministry, " this is a MUST READ. Carey not only talks about what is happening and why, but what to do about it and gives examples of it in action. He has application questions at the end of each section and in the audio answers the questions (bonus!).I will say the material is so packed with insights and food for thought, we had to take a break every 2 chapters to let it soak in. It is the book that can be read and then used as a learning handbook and then referenced. Very helpful. Thank you, Carey, for all your insights!

This has been a great book for my staff as we have wrestled with some of these same questions. If you pick up the book, consider picking up the corresponding videos on his site. Also, DON'T rush through this book with your team. Take the time to challenge each other and truly dig into this material. It will be well worth the small investment of a few books.

A great book on change and growth. The concept of the book is that change and growth begin not with picking a program, but with having important conversations and those critical conversations include asking the right questions. With that premise, this book offers 7 questions for you church and church leadership to have. I have begun using these with the leadership at our small congregation (100 in attendance and found them to be useful.Each chapter has the same basic format introducing the challenge, e.g. "How do we respond as people attend church less often?" followed by some observations on the topic and then a series of discussion questions at the end.I have used several of the questions in our leadership meeting and we have had good conversations, although I have modified the discussion some due to our current setting and culture.It's not a weakness of the book but a few things to consider, some of which may be obvious:- if the church does not have a clear vision, this may not be the best book for you. I am new in this congregation and we don't have a clear vision. While these questions are helpful, many of the questions lead towards making changes but when you don't have a clear vision, then it's hard to filter those changes and decisions- you need to have a culture that is conducive to having difficult conversations; the book presupposes that the church can handle difficult conversations; using this without thinking through how some questions could quickly lead to blaming and finger pointing and cause more problems- it does require a certain amount of self-awareness which is lacking in some churchesOverall, an excellent resource for having good conversations which are the place where change and growth begins.

Carey Nieuwhof dedicates a good portion of his busy schedule to helping other churches navigate difficult and tricky waters. In welcoming and non technical language, Carey relates to us some of the things he has learned through the years about growth. He gives us some tools to have some great, but often difficult conversations about reaching the world around us. Carey uses graciousness and humor to help us think about the things that are holding us back. He points out some of our bad habits (trying the latest fad to make our church grow) and points us backward to the fundamental and critical conversations we need to have to move forward. As a two time church planter and 30 year pastor, I find myself often in this book- the good and bad! This is a book for all the leaders of your church to read carefully and underline. Prayerfully consider where you are and where He might take you next. These are conversations the leaders of our church are having right now, and I intend to use Carey's book to help us have better conversations. LOVE THIS BOOK from Carey Nieuwhof! As a pastor who happens to listen to his podcast and be a big fan of his blog- the truth is, I figured I'd like it. I'm probably a 'ringer' for a customer...HOWEVER...that being said...I might LIKE something...and not finish it. Or I might enjoy something and if it's TOO familiar to me...I'll shelve it and 'come back to it later' (which happens with the regularity of a leap year- though this IS a leap year...so maybe there's a correlation).Carey's book is written in a way, that to me it FEELS like more of a conversation (which since that's in the subtitle...I suppose that means it's successful in its aim). There are times where there are natural pauses- which are great (and dangerous(see previous paragraph) (are you allowed to do parenthesis IN parenthesis) for me...to stop...reflect...consider. And then move on...either later...after a minute...or a day or a week. And to be able to hop around to conversations that are a little more appropriate or helpful in certain seasons is fantastic.It's an 'easy' read- but not an easy answer book. It's the friend who pushes and prods you to be better. You want that friend in your life. Enjoy.
