I really really wanted to give this book five stars. It is probably the best BizTalk book out there. It teaches best practices with reasonably realistic examples. (No useless Hello World examples.) It also explains the architecture and various configurations. I especially appreciated that some of the examples were debugged and unit tested with BizUnit. So why four stars? There are too many typos in the examples. It is obvious that no one went through the examples using the book and a clean environment or a lot of the typos would have been caught. It also took a long time to get hold of all the sample code needed for the setup to be able to code and run all the examples. I found all of it eventually by contacting the publisher and also used Google.Despite the issues I do recommend the book to anyone who wants to understand BizTalk and learn how to build maintainable BizTalk solutions.

First of all it is a great book, and in the first part it extensively details the important parts of BizTalk, how to structure your solution, X/LANG, architecture and its components like BAM, artefacts (i.e. orchestrations, pipelines, maps), operation architecture (i.e. scalability, availability), (unit) testing and messaging concepts. The second part the focus shifts from theory to practice and will be very appealing for professionals that develop BizTalk solutions. This part delivers you the skills to implement error handling, use the WCF-SQL Adapter capabilities, learn BRE (i.e. policies, vocabularies and rules), deal with flat files and bindings, BAM, SQL Broker (Notifications), SharePoint, orchestration patterns (i.e. conveys), handling zombies and some other concepts.Second reason is that this book neatly fits in with other BizTalk books published by PACKT like : * Microsoft BizTalk 2010: Line of Business Systems Integration * SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009Third and final reason you will be a better BizTalk professional or architect, when applying the knowledge found in BizTalk Patterns book and others. Who wouldn't want that!

I think this book is very very good and so helpful for me to understand MS biz talk server 2010;.

This book completely lacks the cookie-cutter feel of most technical books. I'd spent a couple of months working on getting a fairly large BizTalk installation designed and laid out based on a couple of other books and the available Microsoft documentation, but was constantly stymied by the lack of purpose to anything I'd read. I'd learned what all the components were, what the basic flows were, and had a fair idea of how I was going to direct the development team, but was constantly fretting over my lack of deep understanding. There were plenty of questions I was afraid were only going to be answered through trial and error, such as:-How do we properly handle large file inputs while maintaining priority for real-time requests?-How do we best package solutions and projects for loosely coupled deployments with minimal downtime?-How many instances of SQL Server are we really going to need?-Why do physical resources seem to not be the limiting factor on performance in some situations?-How do I best illustrate to the dev team the difference between imperative and pub-sub paradigms? This book answered all of those questions for me, and gave a real understanding of what each component and feature was *for*, not just a description of what it was and how to use it.I do suspect the book requires a bit of knowledge of BizTalk up front as it lacks a lot of the lightweight material that comprises most tech books (installation, lists of components and settings, etc.), but I don't consider that to be a flaw.If you have a basic understanding of BizTalk but really want to make the tool do everything it can, this is a fantastic resource.

This book is broken into two distinct parts. The first part it is a general introduction to the important parts of BizTalk Server 2010: understanding what is BizTalk, when to use it and its capabilities, appropriate topologies for different scenarios (architecture, scalability, availability) and an introduction to the fundaments parts of the platform like BAM, Business Rules and BizTalk artifacts (orchestrations, pipelines, maps, schemas). This part is mainly theory with lot of core patterns. The second part is written in a form of history, love this part, telling how he began to implement BizTalk integrations on a particular customer, start for the basic scenario (Pass thru) to more robust and complex scenarios. This second part the shifts from theory to practice presenting real world integration patterns explained step-by-step (BAM and Unit Tests, messaging solutions, error handling, BRE, orchestration patterns like convoys ...)It is a great book and highly recommended. Congratulations to the author: Dan Rosanova (two time MVP BizTalk Server).

This book contains some of the best practical advice about BizTalk that I have ever read. I can definitely vouch for the best practices that are recommended as I have issued many of the same recommendations to my clients. I regularly consult on BizTalk and the advice that Dan has compiled can help any architect, developer or development team regardless of experience level. This book would make an excellent resource for anyone putting a BizTalk training class together. Dan's treatment of the material is well paced and well organized. I read the book from cover to cover, but the table of contents and the index make it an excellent go-to resource when you need to find a particular topic quickly.

I recently started learning BizTalk 2010 and have had difficulty finding step-by-step instructions on creating "real world" applications, and the proper way to create them. If you are just starting BizTalk 2010, save yourself a lot of headache and start with this book. It might be a good book for advanced BizTalk developers as well.
