Review
“The SCUM Manifesto is a document of profound vulnerability, written in a voice of profound empowerment. It’s a brutal call to arms, written by a woman in a world of hurt. This tension between powerlessness and power makes it an enduring piece of writing. Never have the personal and the political been so mercilessly zipped together, like little steel teeth.” —Claire Dederer, Nation “Solanas is as relevant today as she was in the 1960s, because nothing much has changed for women.” —Julie Bindel, Spectator “You either happen to think this is a work of unadulterated genius, or you dismiss it as the ravings of a loony psycho-bitch, not understanding that this is exactly what makes it so compelling and so charged with insight.” —Suzanne Moore, New Statesman “Valerie Solanas wrote a very angry and very precise portrait of what she considered the male to be: something between a human and an ape; an unresponsive blob only concerned with physical sensation and without the capacity for empathy or self-knowledge or intimacy, and at the same time full of hatred and jealously and shame and guilt. Her description is beautiful and on some level, I think, entirely accurate.” —Nick Cave “Its nihilism is a form of utopia for Solanas, a pre-punk aesthete who fearlessly tossed out ideas that people are just now beginning to raise … As a mixture of social philosophy and fine shtick, her work has the rare virtue of seeming at the same time totally insane and totally right.” —Los Angeles Times “As Solanas reminds us, revolutionary ideas don’t emerge quietly from the elite stratum of a society; they often bloom from its scum.” —Dissent“Gleefully incoherent, crackling with energy.”—Bookslut “Articulate, angry and funny.” —Guardian

I bought this book because I wanted to obtain some understanding of the possible mindset of a radical feminist. As a male graduating senior student of actuarial science, I find that this work very much conflicts with the conservative outlook of many of my peers, myself included.I would say that this work would have much more traction if it weren't so steeped in its eugenicist outlook, although a lot of its case it based on it. The premise being that men are genetically inferior: the Y chromosome being an incomplete X chromosome, which is utter nonsense. The rhetoric in this book is powerful, though. I've never read a book that tried so hard to persuade me want to kill myself. I'd love to do an audio reading for it some day because Ms. Solanas really has a way with words. However, sometimes it's a little Dickens-esque; one of the paragraphs almost spanned an entire page but was exactly one sentence long with many semicolons. However, I enjoy Dickens. Some of the ideas provide actual food for thought. Her idea that money is just an indefinite number goal has a psychological tangent to it that made me muse. As in, I mused long enough to forget the fact that she can't accept that currency need only have value because others accept it as a medium of exchange.I can only recommend this book to mature people. Most I know would probably put it down, dismissing the author as a madwoman or an embittered hag. This writing is erudite in its articulation; it should *not* be dismissed as a longwinded means of saying "Girls rule; boys drool." Many of my friends on Facebook would likely extol passages extracted from this book if I replaced the instances of "male" with "toxic male."It is for this reason that I think this is worth reading today, to understand some voices in public discourse.
I consider Solanas a brilliant thinker. Her prose is clear and powerful.
Honestly, this book is hilarious and I enjoy sending excerpts to my male friends. I first learned of Valerie on American Horror Story and thought she was a made up character. I found her so interesting that I googled just to be sure and when I found out I could actually read her manifesto, I ordered it immediately. I have no regrets.
Great for insomnia.
I expected to find it mildly amusing at best and was surprised by moments of insightfulness. It's second wave feminism at its finest. That's not a compliment but also I get what she was trying to do.
Good book...
This is a very radical feminist tract. While the sentiment is laudable and one to an extent I share, the writer seemed deranged with her juvenile ideas about transcending the system altogether by "quitting work, eliminating money and all governments, and killing men." It is also amazing how she completely overlooked any discussion of religion. I give it 3 stars mainly for its shock and entertainment value.
This booklet is all the funnier for having been written seriously. Keep a copy at work and read from it when something annoys or frustrates you. Clear, uncomplicated, punch-in-the-nose writing.
