Most of the way through and I would highly recommend this book for a number of reasons. The story of this case is one of the saddest and most depraved examples of evil and is simultaneously reflective of a policing disaster that deserves the glaring spotlight of the ages. To study this story one has to take time to read all the available writing in terms of published books, at least some reporting from the trial, and the report of the Missing and Murdered Women Inquiry. I have embarked on this. Having known many cops and having done community volunteering I believe that this author was one of the smart, professional, and dedicated investigators. There were others who were incompetent and biased but who clamored for a piece of the spotlight once Pickton was arrested. He indeed almost got away due to continuous shoddy and substandard policing combined with a cocktail of public apathy toward these women as "other" because of their circumstances. Medical services providers in the Downtown Eastside have stated that they believe 100% of the women they see were abused sexually as children and have ended up in the DTES with addictions in a world of a violent drug culture and margilalization. This book has a tell-it-like-it-is quality that is helpful in this matter. The letters to the victims that the author wrote and intersperses in the book are a humanizing reminder that these women were people. For anyone who has spent time visiting the Downtown Eastside and personally seen the circle of misery there that polite Canadian society and the unquestionable functions of government allow to continue, this book snaps into stark focus. It should read and kept in print.
very stretched out and repetitive.
Very disappointed with the book, author and publisher. Do not waste your money. I found the writing below average (poor editing is part of the issue) and despite her apologies the book was self-serving. Would like to know the true story because this is only one side and I began to feel little trust in the cop telling the tale. Should have bought Cameron's book on the subject.
I was expecting more about the case. More of a repeated overview on how her life was affected and how she wasn't responsible for the delay in catching the killer.
On the positive side of the ledger, the author writes well about the botched investigation in which she was involved. In addition, the quotes from other authors used to begin chapters are well-chosen and pithy. However, the commentary about the investigation leading up to the capture of the killer really only occupies the first part of the book. The rest of the book is about the author's "journey" (zzz) back to some semblance of sanity after her terribly negative experience during the investigation. That portion of the book is not signalled by the title, and I, for one, did not sign up for being on the opposite side of the confessional screen for 100+ pages. If you like the excessive use of the first-person singular pronoun used ad nauseam page after page, then strap in for a "journey" where you and the author will see "I" to "I."
Some good insights to the investigation surrounding the Robert Pickton murders. But it does not even come close to Trevor Greene's book: Bad Dates, which delves into the high risk life style of the drug addicted prostitutes and the possibilities where the murders happened (eg. Foreign boat crews).Shenher writes a very self-serving account of her work in the VPD. She (now a he) makes a long-winded account of her career and frustrations with the VPD. No photographs. No detailed interviews. And gawd, if I had to read one more "letter to...." I thought that I was going to gag. I was really expecting an interesting read about the investigation, the near misses, the final damning evidence. Instead, the book goes on and on about her struggle with fellow biased detectives, the poor families, how the drug addict was "an important part of the community," etc. Not a good crime book. Difficult read. As a former reporter, I was hoping Shenher could write better.
